The third consecutive new construction project with Germantown Municipal School District following the expansion of Riverdale Middle School and completion of the new Forest Hill Elementary School, our team programmed and designed this much needed major expansion to Houston Middle School.
The new expansion, which was constructed on the northwest corner of the existing facility, is designed to include floor-to-ceiling glass and modern finishes… much like the projects A2H recently designed for two other GMSD schools. The expansion will transform the building facade facing Johnson Road into a secured entrance; this shift will also allow for more efficient ingress and egress throughout the site.
The expansion adds additional learning spaces to help alleviate the crowding that existed at Houston Middle School. Highlights include a new 1,100 seat competition gymnasium, which is double the size of the existing one. Other spaces include a new 2,400 SF band practice room with high ceilings for colorguard to practice; two large art rooms will provide much-needed space for the fine arts, as well as house new kilns for pottery; and three new STEM rooms. These new spaces align with the District’s educational priorities by including highly versatile classrooms that can be utilized for wide range of subjects.
All the spaces will allow for flexibility in scheduling, use, and spacing, as per programmatic needs.
